Keeping your glass stove top clean not only enhances the overall appearance of your kitchen but also ensures better cooking performance. A shiny, spotless cooking surface makes cooking enjoyable and inviting.
Regularly cleaning your stove top can prevent buildup that may become harder to remove over time. Make it a habit to wipe down your stove top after each use to keep it clean.
To clean your stovetop, you can either make a DIY stovetop cleaning paste or use a commercial cleaner. I have tried both and found them to work, though the homemade cleaner is effective; it takes a little longer for the product to work and requires a bit more scrubbing to clean the stains. The commercial cleaner works faster and requires less time to break down the dirt. Feel free to choose a cleaner that is suitable for your glass cooktop and works best for you.
In this post, I will discuss how to clean a glass cooktop in five simple steps using both a homemade / Diy cleaner and a commercial cleaner. Let’s dive in!

How to clean a glass cooktop with a commercial cleaner

There are many commercial glass cooktop cleaners available, so make sure to choose one that is suitable for the glass cooktop you have.
My favorite glass cooktop cleaners are Cerema Bryte and Barkeeper Friend Cooktop Cleaner. They both work great, and they both come with a cleaning kit, which you can use instead of a soft sponge.
Both cleaners are designed for glass and can tackle tough stains.
You can choose to use either one of them; they work great!

Wipe Down After Each Use
After cooking, allow the stovetop to cool slightly, then use a damp microfiber cloth with a bit of dish soap to wipe away spills. Wiping down will prevent residue from hardening.
Use Vinegar Spray
Spray your vinegar solution on the surface after cooking and wipe with a clean cloth. The vinegar spray helps lift grease, making it easier to clean in the future.

Baking Soda and Water Paste for Tough Stains
For tougher daily stains, sprinkle a little baking soda on the spots, apply a small amount of water, and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, gently scrub in circular motions with a soft cloth.
Create a Baking Soda Paste: Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a thick paste. You can add a little dish soap.
Spread the paste over the burnt areas and let it sit for at least 15 minutes (or longer for tougher stains).
Scrub Gently: Using a soft pad or sponge, gently scrub the stained areas. Be cautious not to scratch the glass. You can also use a glass scraper to remove stuck stains gently.
Wipe Clean: Spray vinegar on the surface and wipe down or wipe down with a damp cloth to remove any residue. Finish with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to give it a shine.
How to prevent Grease and stain buildup on your Glass cooktop
Preventing stains on your glass stove top can save you lots of time and effort in the long run. Here are some valuable tips to keep your cooktop looking pristine
Use the Right Cookware
Flat-Bottomed Pots and Pans: Ensure your cookware has a flat bottom to maximize contact with the stovetop, which can minimize spills and ensure even cooking.
Avoid Heavy or Rough-Edged Cookware
These can scratch the glass surface, making it more prone to staining and damage.
Clean Spills Immediately
Clean Up Spills While Still Warm. If you notice any spills while cooking, quickly wipe them up with a damp cloth or paper towel when it is safe to do so. This prevents food from baking onto the surface.
Use a Stovetop Protector
Flexible Silicone Mat: Consider using a silicone stovetop cover while cooking to catch spills and splatters. Just make sure the silicone protector is resistant to heat.
Avoid cooking on High Heat.
Cook on Moderate – low heat: Cooking at excessively high temperatures can cause the food to splatter and stick on the stove surface. Use moderate heat settings whenever possible.
Do Regular Maintenance
Daily Cleaning: Incorporate a quick clean into your routine after cooking. This habit prevents food buildup over time and reduces the chance of tough stains forming.
Use Cooking Sprays Carefully
Avoid Aerosol Sprays: Cooking sprays can leave a residue that is difficult to clean. Consider using a brush or a measuring spoon instead to apply oil.
Cool the stove top before cleaning.
Let It Cool: Turn off the stove and ensure it cools down completely before cleaning. Trying to wipe it while it’s still hot can smudge stains on the surface and make them harder to remove.
How to prevent scratches from forming on my cooktop

Here are some safety measures to take when cleaning and caring for your stovetop to avoid damage to it.
Avoid using abrasive cleaners.
Do not use abrasive cleaners, such as steel wool, metal scoring pads, rough sponges, and brushes, to clean your glass cooktop. Use soft sponges and microfiber cloths instead.
Lift, don’t drag cookware.
Always lift your cookware on and off the stove instead of dragging it across the surface. This can reduce the risk of scratching your stove top.
Use the right cookware.
Choose even flat-bottomed pots and pans made of material that won’t scratch the cooktop, such as stainless steel, ceramic, or glass. Try to avoid cast iron, which can be rough and abrasive if dragged on the cooktop.
Clean regularly
Wipe down the stovetop after each use to prevent stain buildup that may require extensive cleaning, which could scratch your cooktop.
Avoid dropping heavy objects on it.
Keep heavy pots and pans from dropping onto the stove top. These heavy objects can cause scratches, cracks, or chips on the surfaces.
How often should you clean your glass cooktop?
Make it a habit to clean your cooktop after every use to prevent stain buildup from food residue, food spills, and grease. Don’t forget to clean up any food spills immediately to prevent them from sticking to the stove surface.
Deep clean your stovetop at least once a week using either a suitable homemade or commercial glass stovetop cleaner.
